Shilajit Chocolate Shake

Mama is fatiguedddddddd. With three small children it’s not often we get all three sleeping through the night… all at once. In fact, for the last few weeks, we’ve had TWO consistently waking up at different points of the night giving mom and dad two-hour sleep intervals. (Jazz hands! High kicks! Tears…. )

Needless to say, I’m a piping-hot mess both in looks and mental… stuff. (See!) I don’t even know what day it is, let alone how to speak coherently, so in order to pull it together I’m relying on a lot of green tea and a slew of supplements.

I’m always on the hunt for supplements that pack a punch both nutritionally and physically. I laid out my vitamin supplements and realized as much as I like sleep… I also likey my vitamins.

Everything from probiotics, to ashwagandha root, B-12, primrose, phytoceramides, gaba and a collagen booster just to name a few. Together promoting immunity boosts, energy, better hair, skin and nails and calming benefits (and what mom doesn’t need to be Zen with temper tantrums galore and messes o’plenty).

Low iron and calcium have been a struggle of mine, so anytime I come across a product that can give me a boost in either area, I’ll try it! That’s exactly what  led me to shilajit and now I’m straight silly for it!

I was researching how to boost my iron and overall energy. Shilajit powder is basically a mineral deposit that is made up of decomposed plant remains usually found in high altitudes in the mountains. When a plant gets pressed between the layers of rock it’s converted into a substance, that substance settles on rocks and then gets harvested. In Ayurveda it’s regarded as the strongest age fighting and rejuvenating opponent on EARTH (earth to amyyyyy) and it’s mineral pitch means “invincible rock.” Many believe it has the ability to cure any aliment.

I was immediately sold based on research alone and started incorporating it into my morning smoothie. It’s insanely high in iron, fluvial acid, calcium, selenium and magnesium. It has 3 calories a serving, no fat, sugar or sodium.

It might seem a little on the pricey side (not Gwyneth Paltrow/Goop-smoothie high, but high-ER), but the good thing is a tiny bit goes a long way. I mean like an eighth of a teaspoon is all you need!

I started off at 1/4th of a teaspoon as recommended on the packaging, but then backed off to 1/8th. This stuff is strong in both smell and taste. I’ve been on it for over a month now and have worked my way up to 1/4th of a teaspoon again and I actually like the way it tastes!

I’ve found cacao (or cocoa) powder is great at cutting through some of the distinct flavor. It has a smoky taste and reminds me of what a rock may taste like. I know it may not sound appealing, but think about how rich in minerals a rock is… that’s how potent this stuff is and it totally works. I’ve definitely felt more energized and I’m certain it’s doing some great things internally. There are a host of health benefits even beyond what I mentioned (claims anyway), so for me, the benefits certainly outweigh any negatives.

Sunfood has a recipe listed on the back of the Shilajit bag. I modified it a bit and came up with my own combo of ingredients. It’s a chocolate shake that is full of iron, hormone-balancing maca powder, antioxidant filled cacao powder (which is also a stimulant) and a few other things. It’s the perfect shake to start my day and while basic, it’s a powerhouse shake that tastes really good!
