Pantry staples ~ Nutritional Yeast

If you’re wanting to build a healthier pantry, then make room on the shelf for this golden goddess.

There are many brands of nutritional yeast on the market, I suggest trying a few different ones to find your preference, but I love this particular brand -Bragg. It’s subtle, yet cheesy and when you see just how nutritious it is, you’ll want to sprinkle it on everything!

So what exactly is nutritional yeast? It’s inactive yeast made from beet molasses or sugar cane, sold as a food product in flakes and in powder form.

Many vegans use it as a cheese substitute. I use it on my salads, as the base of salad dressings, on popcorn, kale chips, in soups and pasta (My kids die for this Mac & cheese I make out of it), stir fry dishes (see the pattern here?!), truly in/on anything!

Just 1 tbsp. has 20 calories, boasts a small amount of fiber, 3 grams of protein- with all 9 amino acids the body can NOT produce, iron, b12, zinc, folic acid just to name a few.

This brand runs $5 to $9, depending on where you buy it, for 4.5oz.

I’ve found http://www.vitacost.com has the best prices around and I order most of my vitamins and powders from there. They ship to your door step too, in one to two days. Can’t beat it. (Amazon is also a good resource, I just find that most food items tend to cost more on that sight.)

So… if you’re trying to eliminate dairy, cut back on cheese, or just wanting to add some nutritional value to a dish, nutritional yeast is your ticket!

Try it!
